In the 1980's and through to the year 2000, the ozone hole developed after decades of CFC and HCFC emissions released chlorine into the upper atmosphere. There, it destroyed protective ozone and allowed more harmful UV-B radiation to reach Earth.
These refrigerants were gradually replaced by non-ozone-depleting HFCs, but many HFCs were later found to have high global warming potential (GWP). This led to the development and adoption of lower GWP alternatives, including many A2L refrigerants, which offer low toxicity and lower flammability while helping protect both the ozone layer and the climate.
A2L is a safety classification commonly applied to newer refrigerants as they pose a greater flammability risk. The “A” means lower toxicity, while “2L” means lower flammability with a relatively slow flame speed. In everyday language, A2L refrigerants are often described as mildly flammable
Refrigerant safety is dependant on understanding both toxicity and flammability classifications and following proper handling procedures.
A2L refrigerants are newer and classified as lower-toxicity and mildly flammable, meaning they can be used safely when appropriate ventilation, leak detection, equipment, and operating procedures are in place.
Proper training, system design, and compliance with applicable safety standards help minimize risk while allowing lower-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants to be used effectively in modern applications.
